The theme for this year's Lent Midweek Services is Eyes on Jesus. From the introduction to the meditations: "O come, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. (Gradual for Lent, based on Hebrews 12:2) When the characters in the Passion narrative look at Jesus, what do they see? In most cases, people misunderstood who He is and what He was doing. In some cases, by faith, people recognized Him aright. Our Lenten series this year, based on the Gospel according to St. Mark, will examine how the various people around Jesus viewed Him—and how we should view Him. We will “fix our eyes” on what Jesus has done to save us from our sins by His holy, precious blood and innocent sufferings and death, and celebrate what God sees on account of His work: our justification for His sake." This year's Lenten season will also feature a special celebration. The Feast of the Annunciation, March 25, falls on a Wednesday this year. We will celebrate this Feast with a momentary exodus from the Lenten "fast" of worship and vest the altar in white, sing the Hymn of Praise, and read the Holy Gospel from the midst of God's people. In addition to this special feast day, we will also observe the custom of receiving ashes on Ash Wednesday, along with a special litany and the Lord's Supper. We will gather to pray the Office of Vespers for the other Wednesdays in Lent. Vespers is an evening service built around the Psalms, Readings from Holy Scripture, and Mary's Magnificat. Following Vespers, those who wish to receive the Lord's Supper will have the opportunity to join in a brief Midweek Eucharist following each Vespers service. In keeping with the penitential nature of the season, Midweek Eucharist will begin with the Rite of Corporate Confession and Individual Absolution (LSB 290-291). 2020 Lent Midweek Schedule Ash Wednesday February 25 Imposition of Ashes @ 4:15 & 7 p.m. Divine Service @ 4:30 & 7 p.m. Feast of the Annunciation March 25 Divine Service at 4:30 & 7 p.m. Lent Midweek Services March 4, 11, 18, April 1 Vespers @ 4:30 & 7 p.m. Followed by Midweek Eucharist
