Epiphany 3 January 26, 2020 Matthew 8:1-13 St. John’s Lutheran Church—Chicago, IL In the name of + Jesus. There are very few things in life that are more satisfying than getting back at someone who has wronged you. I mean, the taste of that justice is sweet. Like balance has been restored to the universe. Or even if you don’t actively get back at someone, it’s hard to get really upset when your nemesis suffers something unfortunate. What goes around comes around, after all.

On Sunday, February 2, our congregation will join together for a single morning service to celebrate the gifts God has given to us and to reflect on what it means to be a generous Christian. Our theme for worship will be the Ritual Purification of Mary and the Presentation of Jesus in the temple - a little discussed story from the childhood of Jesus - along with its application for us in offering sacrifice and offering the whole self. Following worship we will all join together in the gym for a reflection on the relationship between contentment and generosity, as well as new ways for you to be generous in your support for St. John's Lutheran Church and School. The school PTL will provide normal coffee hour treats such as coffee, pastries, and other breakfast-type items. If you would like to turn your breakfast into a brunch, the St. John's Youth Group will be selling sub sandwiches, which you can eat for lunch, OR you can take a sandwich home for your Superbowl party in the evening. If you are particularly hungry for subs, you could order a sandwich for lunch AND for dinner!!! Click below to download a sub sandwich order form. |
